History Ink curates the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong’s 60th Anniversary Exhibition
The Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong was the first ever Mandarin hotel - it birthed the brand. So when we at History Ink were asked to curate an exhibition for its 60th birthday, we were delighted. This permanent historical archive is now open to the public and can be found in the hotel’s East Lobby.
The hotel is one of those icons to anyone who has ever lived in Hong Kong, as well as to its superbly glamourous clientele from around the world. While History Ink co-founding director Vaudine England was there to see the exhibit in the flesh, the welcome news came through that one of the hotel’s ‘Fans’ — Michelle Yeoh — who recently made history by winning her Oscar for Best Actress, would be coming to stay again soon. Hopefully she will like the exhibition too! We had fun finding the hotel’s hidden stories, as well as discovering star turns from Eartha Kitt to John Lennon and Andy Warhol.
Thanks to fellow enthusiast for Hong Kong’s history — Annemarie Evans — her ‘Hong Kong Heritage’ programme on RTHK will feature Vaudine’s walk through the exhibition and the fun of doing history this coming weekend.
You can listen to the podcast on Sunday 26 March via Spotify or on RTHK’s website: https://www.rthk.hk/radio/radio3/programme/hongkongheritage
The full exhibition is available to read online. It has also been featured in various media outlets, including The Standard, Travel Weekly Asia and Remote Lands.
